How to achieve your Life Goals

Everyone of us has dreams and life goals but most are unable to achieve them.  The most common reason is unawareness of the process, how dreams and goals work in life. In the following paragraphs we will discuss these things in detail. Let us start with dreams.

Dreams – the Seeds of Success

A dream is defined as a thought or an idea that is not a reality today and seems impossible today (that’s why it is a dream). Everything in this world started with a dream or an idea. It is a dream that brought progress to this world. We all would still be living in the primitive age, without it. A Dream is the motivating force of life itself.

Dreams are the blueprints of your success. Dreams are what make your life an adventurous odyssey. They power your imagination. They enliven your existence, all faculties, your mind, body, and soul. It is the generating power of all human action, and without it, no one can get very far.

Take up one idea. Make that one idea your life – think of it, dream

of it, live on that idea. Let the brain, muscles, nerves, every

part of your body, be full of that idea, and just leave

every other idea alone. This is the way to success.

It is a fact that success is not in a job or business, but success is in the man, doing them. Success doesn’t come from outside; it is inside you in your thoughts, in your character.

Seeds look so small, yet in a tiny seed maybe thousands of huge trees, with towering trunk and large branches. There is practically unlimited power of a seed. Take an apple, cut it in two halves, and take out seeds. You don’t know how many seeds are in one apple seed, and what is the potential of this one seed. It is practically unlimited.

However, the potential of seed alone doesn’t make the tree. You have to put the seed in the ground, give it water, and look after it with the patience of a mother. The same is with us. Our potential is practically unlimited, but we have to work on ourselves and our dream to produce those unlimited results.

It doesn’t matter whatever background you have come from. What counts is your dream and your burning desire to realize it. 

How to build your Dreams-3 step process

To do it better you have to become like a child who has no limitations in mind. If he sees a real airplane he may ask you to get him one. If he sees a train, he tells you to get him one because he has no limitations in his thinking.

STEP ONE: 

THINK YOUR DREAM

Sit down and brainstorm all the things you’d like to achieve in your life — and then write them down.

If you feel a problem in finding dreams then try asking WHAT IF questions.  Ask yourself,

“What if I could have any job in the world, what would it be? 

What if money and time weren’t a problem, what would I do with the rest of my life?”

Answers to what-if questions like these can get your dreams flowing faster and stronger than ever!  

 STEP TWO: 

VISUALIZE YOUR DREAM

When you visualize your dreams, you start to focus on the picture of your dream in your mind. In other words, what you are doing is shaping your dream into a vision!

The great Irish writer, Jonathan Swift, said: “Vision is the art of seeing things invisible to others.”  A vision is nothing more than a dream so clear, so vivid, that nothing can discourage you from achieving it and no one can ever steal it from you.

When you have a vision, you see the place you want to be, you taste it, you walk around in it. Your vision becomes like a preview to a soon-to-be-released movie. When you have a vision, it’s not a matter of IF your dream will happen.  It’s a matter of WHEN your dream will happen.

STEP THREE: 

PLANNING YOUR DREAM

You can plan in three steps to realize your dreams. If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. Therefore it is necessary that you plan how you will achieve your dream.

Step one is to write a personal mission statement.   

Step two is to break your dreams down into small goals.    

Step three is to write daily TO DO lists.     

Step One:

Write a Mission Statement for you

A mission statement is really nothing more than a written statement of your purpose in life.  It could be a one-sentence statement or it could be a couple in several paragraphs.  Irrespective of the length, a mission statement should have the power to inspire people to levels of achievement they never dreamed possible.             

 A sample mission statement of a Motivational company, xyz teachings is given as follows:

“The mission of xyz teachings is to empower people to know themselves and their enormous value through personal development and enable them to realize their dreams.“

So write your mission statement and refer it on daily basis. 

Step Two:

Write Down Your Goals 

What is a Goal?

Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible.

A dream with a date deadline is a Goal.

Just imagine, you are blindfold, and you cannot see anything, and you are given a dart and a target, what will you hit at? You cannot hit a target unless you can see. Same is with your goals if you do not have a goal or you can’t see it how you will hit the goal or achieve the goal?

Write;

LONG-TERM GOALS (3-5 years) 

SHORT-TERM GOALS (6 months to a year)

IMMEDIATE GOALS (30 days) 

How to set goals?

If you go to work on your goals, your goals will go to work on you. If you go to work on your plan, your plan will go to work on you. Whatever good things we build end up building us.

Our goals affect us, our thinking and our daily lifestyle. If we want to stretch beyond our limits then we should set a goal bigger than our thinking so that we may discover our true capacity, potential. When we set big goals they first seem to us impossible but then later they prove inspiring and just the possibility of achieving them sends us in an ecstasy.

The magic of written down Goals 

You must write down your goals clearly and specifically before you can set out for them.

In 1963, some behavioral scientists performed an experiment with the graduating class of Harvard Business School. They asked the students if they had written down their life goals on paper.

A mere 3 percent of the class had actually written down goals. Yes. Just 3 percent.

Well, twenty-five years later, the scientists again got in touch with the class of ’63. To find out how they had fared in their careers and in their lives.  They found that the net worth of the 3 percent of the class that had written down their goals was MORE than the net worth of the rest of that batch. Not just that; the 3 percent written-down-goal persons seemed to be happier, doing what they wanted to do and leading far more fulfilling lives.        

Step three is to write daily TO DO lists.    

In this step, you can further break down your immediate monthly goals in weekly and daily achievable goals.

When you write daily goals it becomes easy for you to take the action on a daily basis.  For this purpose sit 5 minutes in the night and decide what action is to be taken tomorrow. The reason for this is that when you decide this in the night before sleeping you give this homework to your subconscious mind to work out ways with its tremendous power to find the people, resources and means for next day’s action. Taking daily action in the direction of your dreams makes it easy for you to maintain momentum. Most people fail to take action in the direction of their dream; they cage themselves in the hands of procrastination and take very weak action for their dreams. Weak action creates weak results and massive action creates massive results.
